PROCESS SAFETY

Facilities that handle or process hazardous chemicals have a responsibility to prevent and mitigate the effects of major accidents involving dangerous substances which can cause serious damage or harm to people and/or the environment.

An effective Process Safety Management (PSM) system will be essential in addressing this, and suitable PSM frameworks are provided by both the Centre for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the Energy Institute.

In terms of risk based process safety, effective efforts to improve safety must be based upon:

- An understanding of the hazards and risks of the facilities and their operations.

- An understanding of the demand for, and resources used in, process safety activities.

- An understanding of how process safety activities are influenced by the process safety culture within the organisation.

The hazards and level of risk associated with the facilities or operations should be the primary consideration in the design and improvement of PSM activities. The demand for the activity, resources needed, and embedded safety culture also influence design and improvement decisions.

Our process safety experts are able to advise you with realistic and pragmatic solutions.

We can help you plan, design and develop your process safety programme, using industry standards to form site-specific procedures and then support you in implementing these.

We can support in the entire risk management process including hazard identification, hazard analysis, hazop, LOPA, consequence analysis, and QRA.

Synsol has trained and experienced HAZOP facilitators and LOPA practioners if you would like an independent person to lead your workshops.

PSM

The Centre for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) has been involved with process safety for many years and has a framework for risk based process safety which is built upon four principal elements.

Commit to Process Safety

Crucial to the success of any process safety management system this should involve the creation and nurturing of a process safety culture, drive compliance with standards and best practice, enhance knowledge and competency and ensure the involvement of all employees.

Understand the Hazards and Risk

Understanding the hazards and risks arising from your processes, plants and operations is the key to a successful and cost effective process safety management system.

Manage Risk

Effective management of the identified risks will ensure sufficient resources are directed to the priority areas and lead to long-term accident free, and profitable operations.

Learn from Experience

Process Safety Performance Indicators (PSPIs) and other metrics can provide direct feedback on the workings of a process safety system. Leading indicators can provide early warning of potential issues. Developed knowledge should be used, in conjunction with knowledge shared by others, to promote action and improvement.
